Summer

Written by greenelf on August 18, 2013
So, school starts tomorrow. Decided to write a blog about what I did this summer!

Research Program

A week after school ended, I began working at a lab on campus. Last year, I was in the same program and worked at a mechanical engineering lab for about a month. I wasn’t very interested in it, because the work was so tedious. This year, I was placed in a CS (computer science) and biology lab, and I worked with a grad student on making a program display information in a more readable way. This was exciting because I’ve always been interested in programming, and I was able to see how CS can be used in various fields of study.

Computer Stuff

I also tried to build my own computer (see previous blog). I still haven’t been able to finish it, but I hope to be done with it by next week! I’ll update this once I get my motherboard today (or tomorrow).

Programming

I didn’t do as much programming as I would have liked over the summer. My only real project this summer was working on a MapleStory CMS, called Cype. I’m not sure how many of you played MapleStory private servers, but this is what Cype used to look like:

Here's what my version looks like:

I’ve learned a ton about programming and design from rewriting the website. It's been pretty rewarding (and frustrating) so far. I’ll be releasing an alpha version in about a week!

Travel

I was out of the country for an entire month, so basically a bit more than a third of my entire vacation. I spent four days total in Canada (Montreal and Quebec City). I didn’t get to eat poutine though :(. After this, I spent three weeks in India. Visiting relatives and family friends gets boring after some time, especially if you don’t even know who the people are. I hate the toilets in India, because they’re the squatting type of toilet. Luckily, I didn’t have to use them a single time! Mosquitos were also a problem in some places, but luckily I didn’t get malaria (yet., I could still get it up to 9 days after being bitten). Food is a problem during the rainy season, because water quality is questionable in many places. After India, I stayed in Munich, Germany for two days. This was definitely one of the more enjoyable parts of the trip, because I like Europe! So overall, the India part of the trip was pretty meh, and the rest was fun.

School

Looking forward to senior year, and slacking off
Once I get my computer built, I'll be able to play all the great games I bought from the HumbleBundles and previous Steam sales!

So, how was your summer?

This is awesome. :D That's pretty cool how you're doing so much stuff. And I totally remember how that's exactly what Cype used to look like, haha. Your version is a lot cleaner, I like it.

Anyway, I'll blog about my Summer soon. I just came down to Texas.

I don't understand the first graph! What is it and what does it represent? I don't understand the horizontal axis. Is it RAM? Are the names on the left instances of your application, and the coloured bars RAM usage? Google reverse-image-search doesn't bring anything relevant.
Googling "MZF1_1-4" (from one of the texts on the left) brings up biology related stuff. Which relates to the "Genes" above the blue bar on top haha.. which I didn't see before, I'm silly. Anyway, I would like to know how to read it :)

I like your design for the site, although I'm not a big fan of that green in your colour scheme. I am interested in learning more about it, are you using a framework? Or did you start from scratch? OOP or procedural? Does it support templating and i18n? If so, I can contribute to it making a questionable design and translating it to another language :)

My upvote put you on the frontpage :D

Take a look at my poster, maybe it'll clear things up!
I used the old Cype, and basically deleted all the old styling and refitted the PHP with MySQLi. For design, I'm using bootstrap and a bootswatch theme. At this point, I'm considering just using a PHP framework and start from scratch, and transfer all the features to that. I sent you a PM!
