I'm not gonna lie, I'm in terrible shape after this weekend. My throat is sore, my ass has been on fire from the inside, and I haven't bathed in a while. It's a fall breather for us, so we got Monday and Tuesday off, PLUS my roommate went back home (same place I live). I've essentially had the dorm to myself all weekend to watch enough porn until the new year comes. I can honestly say that I'm a complete and utter introvert, so staying cooped up by myself without having to do any sort of labor is my dream come true (exhibit A: second semester of last year where I didn't have a job or a roommate, a.k.a. the best time of my life).
Besides copious amounts of porn and drinking Yoohoo all weekend, my long weekend would've been... sub par at least, but I took some initiative to turn it around starting yesterday. I renewed my Runescape membership mainly because I've been yearning for something other than Street Fighter or Team Fortress 2, plus there's a new membership loyalty program that lets you get points and spend them on cool (in my opinion; it consists of cosmetics so it's a definite must) items and stuff, so I thought I'd get in on that as quick as I could. I've been working on a combination of fletching, crafting, and woodcutting outside Camelot, but I was quickly turned off by the monotony I had somewhat eagerly shoehorned myself into. I needed something to keep me going while I grinded or else I would hardly make use of this month's membership, but I didn't know that what I was about to find was in front of my face the whole time...
I know I made the quip in MSN yesterday about anyone wanting to watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic with me, but besides observing Internet memes based around the show, and like, me watching one episode to see what the fuss about it was, I never really thought about taking the show seriously. I was kinda joking about actually watching the show, but a spontaneous spark inside me led me to start watching the first episode of it. What I soon found out was that... my life has truly been empty until last night. It was only minutes into the first episode that I knew I was in for one of, if not the best, nights of my life.
I tried starting this blog yesterday since I actually had a source of inspiration to write about something. I found out, however, that it's actually hard to try and write this blog right now as I just finished all of season one and what's out for season two, but I know deep down that all I want to do is re-watch every episode. I may even be more excited for the next episode of season two to come out than whatever SF x Tekken and UMvC3 news will be shown at the New York Comic Con. The combination of complete solidarity, Runescape, and ponies is enough to make me the happiest man on the world, and I'll let you know why. Ah, well, fuck it. I want talk about Runescape or what I do to my body when I'm alone, I'm just gonna talk about ponies.
Let me start by talking about the characters. The cast is vibrant and colorful with every one of the main ponies providing something for everyone to enjoy. The voice acting is really exceptional too, and the voice actors, one being Tara Strong who you might recognize as the voice of characters like Bubbles in the Powerpuff girls or Timmy in the Fairly Oddparents, all make the show addicting as crack (as Sneha would put it). So the main characters include:
Twilight Sparkle The main pony of the show. She's studious and the brainiac of the group, and she's also a direct pupil of Princess Celestia, the ruler of Equestria. She's also a unicorn which lets her use magic, as opposed to land ponies and unicorns who some of the other main characters are.
The first episode of the show starts off with Twilight reading up on the Elements of Harmony and the prophecy that the Mare in the Moon (aka Night Mare Moon) is set to envelop the world in eternal night during the 1000th celebration of the Summer Sun Celebration in a couple days. She tries to tell Princess Celestia about what's at hand, but she's instead sent by the princess to Ponyville, the location of the festival. She's told to not worry about any prophecies but instead to check on the festival's preparations as well as to make friends, mainly since Twilight starts out as an introvert who only likes to study. She goes on to meet the rest of the main ponies, and, well, you're gonna have to watch the show to find out the rest. I MEAN IT. WATCH THE GOD DAMN SHOW.
As the main character of the show, most of the episodes end with Twilight writing to Princess Celestia about her newest lessons about friendship. The end of the episode recaps are done in a way a la South Park, and sometimes when Twilight isn't the central character of an episode (although she makes an appearance in all of them), the lesson may be summarized by a different character. As learned from the second episode, she represents the Element of Harmony for Magic, the rarest and most powerful element.
Rarity Rarity, like Twilight, is a unicorn and can use magic, and she owns the Carousel Boutique where she makes and sells dresses. She may appear vane and melodramatic at first, but she represents the Element of Generosity. She adores sophistication and glamor as required necessities, but she still helps out her friends in any kind of situation. It's kind of interesting, as well as a contradiction, to see a character with her personality be so, uh, non-selfish I guess though. There are a couple of times where she acts snooty, but for the most part, as the narcissistic type, she's kind and supportive. And sometimes she can be kind of a bad ass.
Applejack Applejack represents the Element of Honesty, and is a hard-worker and natural leader who lives on Sweet Apple Farm with her grandma Granny Smith, brother Big Macintosh, and little sister Applebloom. She's a cowboy pony and master lassoer and herder, and one of my favorite ponies. Maybe because I'm from Montana and there's a lot of cowboys here or maybe because that accent is too good to hate. Celery!
Pinkie Pie The most apparent jokester of the group, she represents the Element of Laughter. She's zany, random, and a total badass as well as one of my favorite characters. She's known to throw some bitchin' parties, and a lot of the random songs she breaks out into are pretty hilarious. As an example, here's a cool song she sings which was also parodied in a TF2-themed flash on Newgrounds a bit ago.
Rainbow Dash A brash pegasus who longs to be a part of the Wonderbolts, Rainbow Dash represents the Element of Loyalty. She's the tomboy of the group and, like Pinkie Pie, is often known to enjoy mischief, but she's also competitive and dedicated to her friends. She is also one of the only pegasi to perform a Sonic Rainboom, and her first occasion of doing so actually secretly influenced all of her friends way before they ever met. Overall, she's sleek, cool, awesome, and maybe a little butch.
Fluttershy One of the fan favorites from comments I've read, Fluttershy represents the Element of Kindness. She's the animal caretaker of Ponyville, and has a level of understanding with all creatures that other ponies do not. She's very timid and shy, but there are certain times where she freaks the fuck out over stuff, and those moments are pretty funny. I kind of didn't like her at first, but as she became a bit more outspoken with her friends I quickly grew to like her like most everyone else.
Spike Spike, a young dragon, is Twilight's assistant and the letter messenger between her and Princess Celestia. Although just her assistant, he usually accompanies the ponies in most of the episodes and has a crush on Rarity. Along with Pinkie Pie, he's probably one of the funniest characters and he enjoys a good mustache.
The Cutie Mark Crusaders So these little fillies, from left to right, are Sweetie Belle (Rarity's sister), Applebloom (Applejack's sister), and Scootaloo. There are a few episodes about their exploits to find their Cutie Marks, the emblems on all ponies legs that represents what makes them special and unique, but thus far haven't been able to figure out what sets them apart from all other ponies. It's a good sub-plot that goes on between episodes, and hopefully there's a possibility they'll finally get their Cutie Marks in season two.
As for things like the music, there are a lot of great tunes. Besides short songs that characters like Pinkie Pie come up with herself, there are a lot of other enjoyable songs from other episodes, like the ones about the Winter Wrap Up and the Art of the Dress:
The creators of the show even made a video shown during commercials for MLP parodying California Gurls. It's pretty cool since it officially mentions the fanmade term "brony" as well as the the name coined by fans for the DJ pony shown in one of the episodes (called DJ P0N-3).
Now you may find this blog very fruity and uncomfortable, but I speak from the heart here. At first when I heard about grown men enjoying this show, I was like
, but now after watching the show and becoming a believer, I'm more like
, and my message to you all is
In conclusion: I am full-heartedly and without shame... a brony. I mean, even Bill Clinton is a brony.
